Team India Stranded In Barbados Due To Hurricane Beryl:
The Indian cricket team, fresh off their triumph at the T20 World Cup, has been stranded in Barbados for the past couple of days due to the onslaught of Hurricane Beryl. The powerful Category 4 storm has battered the Caribbean island, forcing the closure of the Grantley Adams International Airport and grounding all flights.
When Was Team India Scheduled To Depart Barbados?
The team was scheduled to depart Barbados on Monday, July 1st at 11am local time, but the Grantley Adams International Airport was forced to shut down due to the hurricane, stalling all flight services indefinitely. The hurricane brought life-threatening winds and storms to Barbados, prompting a lockdown since Sunday evening.
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley's Announcement:
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that the airport is expected to become operational again within the next 6-12 hours as final checks are being conducted. She expressed optimism about resuming normal airport operations as soon as possible to facilitate the departure of those stranded, including the Indian cricket team.
BCCI Exploring Alternative Arrangements:
The BCCI is now working on alternative arrangements to fly the team directly to India, potentially with a refueling stop in the United States or Europe. However, the team’s departure is contingent on the airport in Barbados resuming operations, which is expected to happen within the next 6-12 hours after final checks are completed.
Narrow Window for Departure:
The team’s situation is further complicated by the fact that another hurricane is forecasted to hit the region on Wednesday. This narrow window of opportunity has added to the urgency of the BCCI’s efforts to secure a safe and timely departure for the Indian squad.
Warm Welcome Awaits in India:
Despite the unexpected delay, a warm reception by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is awaiting the players upon their return to India. The team’s triumph at the T20 World Cup has been a source of immense pride for the nation, and the delayed homecoming is unlikely to dampen the celebratory mood.
